Joinville is the largest and richest city in the State of Santa Catarina, situated in the south of Brasil. The city was a "wedding present". In mid 1843, the French Prince, Fracois Ferdinand Felipe, married Portuguese Princess, Francisca Carolina, sister of D Pedro II. In honor of this union, the patriarch gave the land (where Joinville is now situated) as a wedding present to the royal couple. However, they never enjoyed this present, in fact they never even visited the city. After the French Revolution in 1848, a large number of German, Austrian, French and Norwegian immigrants came to Brazil, especially to this region, where Joinville is situated today. First called, Dona Francisca Colony, only one year later, in 1852 did the colony receive the name of Joinville. Today, also known as the "City of Flowers", the "City of Bicycles" or even "City of the Princes", Joinville is a city with a "European air", born from a diverse mixture of European immigrants.
